Put on Your ‘Kinky Boots’ and Strut Your Way To The Peabody

Brimming with charm, wit, and passion, “Kinky Boots” is a dynamic musical and visual spectacle. Its uplifting story, complemented by an electrifying score by Tony and Grammy Award-winner Cyndi Lauper, super-charged the audience.

This must-see national tour is at the Peabody Opera House for one more performance at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14.

The Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, took home the Tony Award for Best Musical and five more wins out of its 13 total nominations in 2013. Based on the British film of the same name, the story follows Charlie Price, a reluctant heir of a failing shoe factory, who meets Lola, a tall and confident drag queen.  Lola inspires Charlie to develop a “different range of shoe for a different range of man.” The Company taps into a niche market — catering to flashy drag queens — in order to save the factory.

The tour features stellar vocals from its lead, Lance Bordelon as Charlie, who brings an enigmatic charm to the stage. His impressive vocal skills are matched by Jos N. Banks as Lola. Banks, in the role that earned Billy Porter a Tony, delivers a deeply layered and witty portrayal of the flamboyant drag queen. Other standouts include Sydney Patrick as the lovestruck Lauren. She shines in quirky powerhouse numbers, especially “The History of Wrong Guys.”

The ensemble is particularly strong, especially Lola’s Angels, who high kick and strut in gorgeous costumes by Gregg Barnes. Lauper’s score features several rousing numbers such as “Sex Is in the Heel,” “Everybody Say Yeah,” and “Raise You Up/Just Be.” Yet at the heart of this glitzy and humorous musical is a universal story of love, acceptance, and identity.

Saturday’s afternoon performance was truly inspiring, engaging, and outright fun. Don’t miss your chance to see the popular and entertaining “Kinky Boots” one more time at Peabody Opera House. Click here to get your tickets now.
